The Department of the Interior is thinking about seismic airgun testing for oil and gas in the Atlantic Ocean from Delaware to Florida. This would involve loud blasts of compressed air toward the ocean floor every 10 seconds for days or weeks in time. Blasts can cause dolphins and whales to become deaf which will make it hard for them to communicate and find food. The testing could injure or kill 138,500 marine animals. Testing threatens the survival of critically endangered North Atlantic right whales. Their nursery is on the edge of the testing zone. If offshore oil drilling does these tests, the Atlantic coast will be a disaster not unlike the 2010 Deepwater Horizon oil spill.
The DOI has held off making a recommendation until Spring of 2014 to include newer scientific data in their research. This is good news since there will not be any more Atlantic coast seismic testing this year, and they have more time to make the right decision.
I urge the Obama administration to reject this dangerous proposal and stop the East Coast drilling before it starts!
