BILLINGS, Mont. -- Billings Mustangs second baseman Avain Rachal hit a tie-breaking three-run homer as the home team defeated the Ogden Raptors 4-3 Saturday night in Pioneer League action at Dehler Park.
The Raptors had opportunities to win their third straight game, but couldn't come up with the big hit.
With the score tied 1-1 entering the bottom of the fifth, the Mustangs got its big hit of the game.
With one out, Carlton Daal walked, and Gabriel Rosa hit into a fielder's choice for the second out. Aristides Aquino kept the inning going with a single to left field. Rachal then hit the first pitch he saw over the wall in right for a three-run home run, giving the Mustangs a 4-1 lead.
The Raptors battled back in the eighth inning.
Pat Stover and Jesus Valdez drew consecutive walks to start the inning. After Jacob Scavuzzo and Alex Santana struck out, Stover and Valdez were still at first and second. Gerson Nunez then delivered his second RBI single of the game with a bloop hit to left field, putting runners on the corners. With Austin Cowen batting, Joe Mantoni threw a wild pitch that let Valdez score and make it a one-run game.
Cowen walked, and Zach Babitt flied out to center to end the inning.
Mantoni threw a perfect ninth inning to finish the game and earn his fifth save. Daniel Wright earned the victory for the Mustangs.
Jordan Hershiser had an impressive game on the mound for Ogden. Pitching in relief of starter Luis DePaula, the right-hander pitched two hitless innings with three strikeouts.
Ogden and Billings meet again this afternoon before playing games Monday and Tuesday.
