SPRINGDALE — The Utah Department of Public Safety is using a helicopter to search for two women backpacking near Zion National Park.
The Kane County Sheriff’s Office says the 40- and 51-year-old women set off Thursday for the East Fork of the Virgin River and failed to reappear Sunday as planned.
The National Weather Service, meanwhile, is issuing flash-flood warnings for southern Utah.
Zion National Park saw an inch and a half of rain on Sunday. More rain was falling Monday as the search for the women continued.
Rock slides have closed the Zion-Mt. Carmel Highway at times, where the women set off.
The storms are remnants of a Pacific tropical depression that’s pushing moisture into parts of Nevada, Arizona and Utah.
