OREM, Utah (AP) -- A newlywed died after she was struck by an SUV driven by a drunken driver while sitting on a sidewalk outside her Orem home, police said Monday.
Ashlee Zimmer, 22, was sitting on a curb near her car and smoking a cigarette about 1:30 a.m. Sunday, when 26-year-old Ramiro Serrano Hernandez drove the SUV onto the sidewalk, Orem police Lt. Craig Martinez said.
Hernandez lost control of the SUV, hitting Zimmer's car and then Zimmer, police said. Her body was dragged beneath the SUV as it careened through a fence and hit a building.
Zimmer's husband of four months heard the crash, found his wife pinned under the car and called police.
When paramedics arrived, Hernandez had fled, Martinez said.
Zimmer was rushed to a hospital where she was pronounced dead.
Officers found Hernandez about an hour later, hiding behind a trash bin several blocks away, the Deseret News reported.
He had been cited by police in Lindon earlier Saturday for being drunk and disorderly at a wedding, Martinez told The Salt Lake Tribune. A friend had given him a ride home.
Hernandez was booked into Utah County Jail on Sunday on a $500,000 cash bail.
He was under an immigration hold and is facing charges of automobile homicide, having an expired driver's license and leaving the scene of an accident. It was unclear if he had an attorney.
