- Arizona author Ryan Rapier will read from and sign his humorous novel "The Reluctant Blogger" (Cedar Fort Publishing, $9.99) at 7 p.m. Monday, Sept. 2, at Weller Book Works, 607 Trolley Square, Salt Lake City.
Rapier's book is about a recently widowed man whose therapist assigns him to blog about single parenthood, dating and the unexpected turns in life.
- Author Kirstin Scott will read and sign her book "Motherlunge" (New Issues Poetry & Prose, $15), at 4 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 7, at Weller Book Works, 607 Trolley Square, Salt Lake City.
"Motherlunge" is an irreverent novel about first sex, true love, chronic sibling rivalry and the deepest fear of young adulthood: the fear of inheriting a disappointing life. The novel won the AWP Prize for the Novel and the Utah Original Writing Competition. Scott recently moved from Salt Lake City to Mexico.
- Salt Lake City author Matthew J. Kirby, winner of the Edgar Award for Best Juvenile Mystery, will read from and sign his new book for middle grade readers, "The Lost Kingdom" ($17.99, Scholastic Press) at 7 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 5, at The King's English Bookshop at 1511 S. 1500 East, Salt Lake City.
In his adventure story aimed at middle-grade readers and set in a reimagined mythical America, a secret society of philosophers and scientists board a flying airship to search the American West wilderness for the lost people of Welsh prince Madoc, with French soldiers in hot pursuit.
- Local author Melissa Barlow will sign her cookbook for kids, "Noodlemania!: 50 Playful Pasta Recipes" (Quirk Books, $15.95), at 2 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 7, at The King's English Bookshop at 1511 S. 1500 East, Salt Lake City.
Barlow is the author of several successful cookbooks, including "Easy Cut-Up Cakes for Kids" and "101 Things to Do With a Salad."
One week left for Brigham book sale
The annual used book sale held by the Friends of the Brigham City Library continues through Saturday, Sept. 7, during regular library hours (10 a.m.-9 p.m. Monday-Thursday, and 10 a.m.-6 p.m. Friday and Saturday; closed Monday for Labor Day).
This sale offers discounted prices: $1 for most books and $.50 for small paperbacks. All of the money earned from the sale of these used books, CDs and magazines goes to public library improvements.
The sale ends with the $1-a-bag Blowout Sale on Peach Days Saturday, Sept. 7. On that day, the sale begins after the parade ends at noon and runs until 6 p.m. The sale is in the basement of the library at 26 Forest St. in Brigham City near the historical courthouse.
