LOGAN -- A 42-year-old Layton man suffered severe injuries when he was thrown from a rolling pickup truck on the Ant Flat Road south of Hardware Ranch.

Michael Metcalf and his passenger, David Singer, 52, also from Layton, were speeding southbound Sunday when Metcalf lost control of the 2000 Toyota Tundra and was thrown from the truck during the crash, said Cache County Sheriff's Lt. Chad Jensen.

Metcalf was taken by medical helicopter to a local area hospital. He was unconscious and unresponsive at the time. Singer was taken to Logan Regional Hospital by ground and was complaining of leg pain and cuts on his head.

Jensen said Singer was treated and released, but Metcalf remained in a coma as of Monday afternoon.

Preliminary indications are that excessive speed was a factor on a gravel road that is "badly pitted and washboarded," Jensen said.
