Is it Knight time?
Northridge's last league volleyball title came in 2009. Since then, the Darts rang up a Region 1 three-peat while going 33-1 in league matches with four eventual NCAA Division I signees.
The Knights went 9-0 in the two-day, eight-team Round Table Rumble, which included Davis and Fremont.
"I think Northridge has to be considered the Region 1 favorite at this point," said Fremont coach Brock Mitchell on Saturday. "Talent-wise, I think we're pretty even with them. Right now, they're playing better as a team than we are. We have room for growth, and we need to learn to finish."
Fremont (8-3), which lost twice to Northridge at the Round Table Rumble including a three-setter -- 27-25, 20-25, 17-16 (set 3 had a 17-point cap) -- in Saturday's championship match, travels to the 'Ridge for Wednesday's league opener.
"No doubt, this was a case of missed opportunities," Mitchell said. "We had three match points and missed them all."
"This is a good start for us," said coach Shauna Haney of the Knights' 10-1 record, which includes a home-court victory over defending state 5-A champion Pleasant Grove.
Syracuse (9-1) swept the Hunter tournament with a 25-18, 25-13 win over Clearfield in the championship match en route to an 8-0 record.
There are three new coaches in a seven-team Region 1 this year: Destree Donahue at Layton; Melanie Harris at Weber; and Brooke Butler at Viewmont.
