BEAVER DAM -- A body was recovered late Thursday night from the scene of a house fire that occurred earlier in the day on Beaver Dam Road, Box Elder County sheriff's deputies said.
"(The body) is believed to be the adult male who was unaccounted for," Chief Deputy Kevin Potter said Friday. "But a positive identification won't be made until an examination by the state medical examiner is complete," Potter told the Standard-Examiner.
Potter said he suspects it will be a couple of days before the examination is complete.
"No name will be released until the positive identification is made," he said.
"A preliminary investigation suggests the fire was intentionally started as a means of committing suicide," Potter said.
Firefighters responded to a house fire at 16488 Beaver Dam Road on Thursday morning. Neighbors heard an explosion and stepped outside to see smoke and flames coming from the home, Potter said.
Firefighters arrived around 11:50 a.m. and contained the fire, which had fully engulfed the house. The homeowner was unaccounted for during the incident.
For safety reasons, fire investigators could not immediately enter the remnants of the structure to find a cause and to see if the man was in the home, he said.
Beaver Dam is an unincorporated community in eastern Box Elder County, northeast of Tremonton.
Those agencies responding to the incident were the sheriff's department, Utah Highway Patrol, the fire departments of Fielding, Garland and Tremonton, and the Plymouth and Box Elder fire marshal.
