SPANISH FORK -- Officials say an off-duty Utah County sheriff's sergeant died in a plane crash near Spanish Fork on Friday morning.
Utah County Sheriff Jim Tracey says 40-year-old Sgt. Jay Lessley died when the experimental aircraft he was piloting crashed shortly after taking off from the Spanish Fork airport.
Investigators found the plane's wreckage in Spanish Fork, a city of 36,000 about 50 miles south of Salt Lake City.
Lessley was a flight instructor and an occasionally served as a pilot for the sheriff's department in the nine years he served there.
Tracey says Lessley is survived by a wife and 15-year-old son.
The cause of the crash is unknown.
