Making our own choices makes Jesus happy

Editor,

I’m confused about the dominant religion of our state (Mormon Church). Members openly state that before we came to Earth, it was the devil’s plan to “force us” to be good and Jesus’s plan to let us be free to make our own choices. Utah should be more free than any other state, legalizing marijuana, prostitution, and gambling.

I want to know why the legislators of our state, most of whom are part of our dominant religion, continue to “force us” to be good by jailing any adult participating in those activities.

I think the devil is smiling at our current anti-freedom laws. Living in a free society isn’t about having a Mr. Rogers squeaky clean neighborhood. It’s about allowing adults to make their own choices and pay their own consequences if they cause harm to the person or property of someone else. That is how we learn and grow. Let’s make Jesus happy and legalize marijuana, prostitution, and gambling!
