WEST VALLEY CITY -- Police say they've fired one officer from their now-disbanded drug unit and reinstated seven others after an internal investigation.
The city and police department released a statement Thursday afternoon that says Officer Shaun Cowley had committed "terminable offenses."
The release did not offer further details about the offenses. Chief Lee Russo did not immediately return messages.
Messages left with Cowley's attorney were not returned Thursday.
Cowley fatally shot an unarmed 21-year-old woman last November during a narcotics stakeout.
The shooting sparked the department's internal investigation into the drug squad, which found officers kept souvenirs from drug busts, evidence was mishandled and other problems.
The Salt Lake County Attorney last month ruled the shooting was unjustified, and the other officer involved in the incident is still on leave.
