FARMINGTON -- Davis School District is continuing to make improvements to its schools using the $250 million bond approved by Davis County voters and received in 2009.
The biggest projects for the district in 2013 have been upgrades to Bountiful High School, Central Davis Junior High in Layton, and the building of a new elementary school in Woods Cross.
Bountiful High School recently completed phases 1 and 2, which included air conditioning for most of the classrooms, a remodeled cafeteria and the addition of a new commons area and elevator, making the school ADA compliant.
Set to begin next year are phases 3 and 4, which include resurfacing of the parking lot, finishing off the rest of the classrooms with air conditioning, and remodeling of the school offices.
"Our initial plan was to rebuild the school, but the district needs a new high school in the next five years, and we can't afford to build two high schools. We decided to bite the bullet and remodel Bountiful High School. That remodel will last us for another 10 to 20 years," said Gary Payne, Davis School District facilities administrator.
Construction to Central Davis Junior High began earlier this year for a remodeled music suite, new cafeteria, an upgrade to the commons area, and a new hallway connecting two sections of the two-story school. Previously, students could not access both sides of the second level without going down to the main level first.
"The congestion of students from one side to the other is pretty intense, so we've added a corridor. And, where the old gym was, we've created a commons and circulation space, so when one walks through the front doors, you enter that new well-lit area," Payne said.
Construction to the school should be completed in December.
Another significant portion of the bond money is going toward a new elementary school in Woods Cross, at 1950 West and approximately 2050 North. It is about 10 percent complete and is scheduled to be finished by August 2014.
The remainder of the bond money is being used for routine maintenance projects, such as roof and boiler repairs.
