LAYTON -- A baby girl, who turned 1-year-old while in the hospital, died Tuesday night, police said.
Aliyah Wild died while being cared for at Primary Children's Medical Center in Salt Lake City, said Layton Police Lt. Shawn Horton.
An autopsy is being done by the state medical examiner's office on Wednesday, Horton said. Results from the autopsy will be forwarded to the Davis County Attorney's Office.
Aliyah had been flown to the Salt Lake hospital on Sept. 10 after her mother and Tyler Ryan Geary, 25, took the child to Davis Hospital early that morning.
"I haven't spoken with the investigator, but I'm sure the family is very traumatized by this very horrible thing," Horton said. "We send our deepest sympathy to the family and to our investigators."
Horton said Aliyah was 11 months old when she went into the hospital, but turned 1 while she was there.
Police had arrested Geary and booked him on second-degree felony child abuse in the Davis County Jail on Sept. 10 following an investigation. He was released on bail on Sept. 11.
Horton said police are asking the Davis County Attorney's Office to amend the charges to first-degree felony child abuse homicide.
The court may hold another bail hearing and increase Geary's bail in light of the new charge, Horton said.
Geary had told police he was home alone with the child and became upset with the baby's crying, police said. Geary said he believed he shook the baby and threw her.
Geary then picked up the child's mother from work and took the baby to Davis Hospital, police said. The baby was then transported to Primary Children's Medical Center in Salt Lake City with injuries consistent with shaken baby syndrome. She had been in critical condition.
Police received reports about the abuse around 6:30 a.m. Sept. 10 and then questioned Geary and the child's mother, police said.
The Davis County Attorney's Office will wait for autopsy results before filing formal charges with 2nd District Court.
