WEST VALLEY CITY -- Scott Aumen, from Duncan, B.C., claimed Rocky Mountain Raceways' inaugural Salt City 200 trophy on Sept. 14 after a spirited showdown with Mike Murgoitio, from Meridian, Idaho.
The Salt City 200 was broken down into four 50-lap segments, of which Murgoitio dominated the first three. During the last segment of the race, Aumen took the lead over Murgoitio and held on for the final laps of the race. Murgoitio didn't give up the position easily, in a last attempt to regain the lead he appeared to have bested Aumen, but was not able to make it stick.
"My heart was beating pretty quick," Aumen said of the race with Murgoitio. This is the first time Aumen has raced at Rocky Mountain Raceways' American Speed Association 3/8 mile, high-banked, paved oval.
"This is a spectacular win," says Aumen, who won the Daffodil Cup earlier this year at Western Speedway in Victoria, British Columbia.
Murgoitio finished the Salt City 200 in a close second, Aaron Pierce came in third, Bryan Warf in fourth and Johnny Giesler rounded out the top five.
Aaron Pierce set a new track record during qualifying, running 12.475. The previous track record of 12.477 was set by Jeff Montgomery on May 27, 2013.
The Salt City 200 marked the last race for the Western Winged Sprintcar series. Gieseler secured the Western Winged Sprintcars' 2013 Championship.
Maverik Modified racer Tyler Whetstone also found the 2013 Championship Circle as tonight's event concluded the Maverik Modified's points campaign.
"Although Tyler didn't win any main event victories, he has qualified consistently all season. Tyler is a model racer and we are excited to be crowning him as our 2013 Champion," said Mike Eames, Rocky Mountain Raceways general manager.
ASA winners included: Mark Ith Jr (Maverik Modified Main 1,) Nick Parker (Maverik Modified Main 2,) Dana Combs (Hornets,) Corey Walker (Figure-8 Cars,) and Con Rock Crusher (Double Deckers.)
ASA weekly racing will continue on Oct. 5 with the Modified 100 featuring Maverik Modifieds, Comcast Super Stocks, Winged Sprints, Focus Midgets and Western States Equipment Figure-8 Trains.
This will be Rocky Mountain Raceways' final event of the 2013 season.
