LOGAN -- The Roy Royals will look back on Friday's Region 5 showdown and just shake their head.
The Royals gave away the entire first quarter, and turned the ball over eight time times in all, putting themselves in a deep hole they could not fight out of, falling to the Logan Grizzlies 49-38 in a shootout.
Bidding to go 5-0 for the first time since the 1970s, the Royals surrendered 25 points to open the game before they came streaking back, but just could never slow the potent Chase Nelson-led Grizzlies offense enough to even up the score.
Logan senior quarterback Chase Nelson accounted for a state-record 691 yards of total offense. He completed 29 of 41 passes for 441 yards and five touchdowns and carried the ball 39 times for another 250 yards and two more scores. His 691 yards broke the previous state record held by his older brother D.J.
Royal junior Reciever Nate Jones had a career night, amassing more tha 200 receiving yards. Jones gashed the Grizz defense time and time again, scoring 2 touchdowns, as well as putting his team up inside the 10 yard line on two other occasions.
Jones' first touchdown was a 53 yard strike from Tyler Skidmore, the second was from 77 yards out
Royals signal caller Skidmore, besides connecting with Jones, had a 1 yard touchdown run of his own. Baby Tee Eteuati and Skyler Hoover each added a touchdown to round out the Royals scores. he loss drops the Royals to 1-1 in Region 5 play, 4-1 overall.
* BOX ELDER 45, OGDEN 14: At Brigham City, the Bees found plenty of ways to score and ran wild on the visting Tigers.
Breckin Gunter had a pair of rushing touchdowns, Shad Watson tossed a pair of TDs and ran one in, and Peter Gerlach added a pair of 20-yard field goals to six PATs for Box Elder. Darius McFarland got the scoring going by recovering a blocked kick in the end zone to put the Tigers on their heels.
In the late-going, Ogden go TD receptions from Josh Shackleford and Blake Harvey.
* MOUNTAIN CREST 44, BONNEVILLE 0: At Hyrum, Mountain Crest's Luke Smith caught a 45-yard pass from Brockton Ellison late in the third quarter to extend the blowout lead over Bonneville en route to the Mustangs' first win of the season.
* SKY VIEW 59, PROVO 14: At Provo, Braxton Godderidge guided the Sky View offense to a big win, passing 13 for 15 with 231 yards and three touchdowns in the Bobcats' win over Provo.
In all, the four Region 5 teams that won games on Friday scored 59, 44, 45 and 49 points on their opponents.
