PLAIN CITY -- If the Darts win their first league title since 2009, they can look to two September road breakthroughs as a catalyst.
"Fremont is well-coached and they always do a great job preparing for us," said Davis High offensive coordinator Tyler Gladwell. "Fremont's record is not indicative of an 0-4 team. We didn't feel like we were playing an 0-4 team."
Winless teams can be dangerous teams, and the Silver Wolves were tied 14-all with undefeated Davis at halftime of Friday's homecoming game at Moyes Field.
Converting a fumble and an interception into 14 fourth-quarter points, the Darts dropped Fremont 28-14 in a Region 1 game.
Davis (5-0 overall, 2-0 league) allowed a season-high point total in closing to 6-8 in the all-time series versus the Silver Wolves.
"The two turnovers were the turning point of the game when we capitalized on them," Gladwell said. "Credit our defense for putting us in that position."
Kawika Tupuola recovered Justin Shaw's fumble at the Fremont 29-yard at 4:13 of the third quarter. Colton Chronister ripped off a 58-yard touchdown run down the Silver Wolves' sideline at 2:28, but it was negated by a holding penalty.
On the first play of the fourth quarter, Mason White scored on a 3-yard run for a 21-14 Darts' lead with 11:55 remaining.
Shaw, a 6-foot-5 junior quarterback, had a pass tipped which was intercepted by Nate Ferguson at the Davis 33 with 11:20 left.
Parker Rose's 34-yard run made it 28-14 with 10:23 remaining.
"The first half was sporadic," Gladwell said. "We had the two touchdown passes, but there was no rhythm to the game."
Chronister connected with wideout Trevor Leavitt on 68- and 23-yard touchdown passes.
"Chronister and Leavitt have had some good chemistry, and with Leavitt's speed we hope to get him behind the defense," Gladwell said. "In the second half, we wanted to run the ball, sustain drives and take time off the clock."
Shaw ran for a 5-yard touchdown and threw a 4-yard pass to Paxton Merrill for Fremont (0-5, 0-2).
