Is Senator Mike Lee willing to give up his paycheck for shutting down the federal government? It could signal to some people that this is really about principal and not just politics.
Senators Mike Lee, R-Utah, and Sen. Ted Cruz, R-Texas, want funding for “Obamacare” pulled or they threaten to bring the U.S. government to a halt. Normal people do not negotiate this way. The Constitution is a procedure document an instrument that allows elected representatives to find common ground.
Shutting down the government is not a patriotic act. Senators Lee and Cruz claim a new moral high ground arguing the nation’s debt is too high and there must be spending cuts.
In politics there is no currency more important than the good will of the public. The “good will” question Senators Mike Lee and Ted Cruz need to answer is this: Will Senators Lee and Cruz give up their $174,000 salaries? Will they put their families through the same fear and uncertainty they are asking others to bear?
Elected representatives have the responsibility to solve problems. Terrorist take hostages and make huge demands, and if the demands are not met the destroy people and blow things up. America’s history is filled with names of senators who are remembered as great statesman. Not many are remembered for governing by tantrum.
