SALT LAKE CITY -- An aggravated murder charge has been filed against a felon accused of killing a young prostitute in Utah 18 years ago.
It was a cold case recently cracked open by a Utah sheriff.
The charge was filed Thursday against 46-year-old Joseph Michael Simpson, who was undone by a cigarette butt he dropped that provided DNA evidence for his recent arrest. It matched a sample investigators obtained from granite rocks used to crush the skull of the 17-year-old girl.
The body of Krystal Lynn Beslanowitch was found Dec. 6, 1995, along the Provo River near Midway.
Wasatch County Sheriff Todd Bonner trailed Simpson for four days in Florida last month to grab a discarded cigarette Simpson left at a smoke shop.
Bonner returned last week to help make the arrest of Simpson, a one-time convicted murderer on parole.
