Verla Petersen Elwood of Ogden celebrated her 80th birthday with a family dinner at The Greenery, one of her favorite restaurants.
She was born on Sept. 29, 1933, in Lewiston. Her parents are Leon Lars Petersen and Elpha Potter Petersen. She is the oldest of four children. Her siblings are Larry J. and Carol Petersen, Wheatridge, Colo.; Linda Coates, Smithfield; and Sharol Connary (deceased).
She married Parley Elwood in Lewiston on Oct. 16, 1959. Their children and their spouses are Faye Dawn and Duaine Jacobson, South Willard; and Kimberley Dawn and Shane Stegen, Ogden. They have eight grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren with one on the way.
She is a lifelong member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and has held many positions in the ward and stakes levels. She was the Family Record Extraction Program director for 10 years, which was one of her favorite callings. She has also served in the Primary, Relief Society and Young Women organizations.
She grew up doing various farm life chores. She graduated from North Cache High School and attended Utah State and Weber State colleges.
She worked for Mountain Bell (U.S. Quest), retiring in 1990. While employed there, she served for 10 years as the secretary/treasurer of the Communications Workers of America union. After retirement, she graduated from Weber State LDS Institute and worked for Stegen's Repair.
She has also enjoyed traveling, particularly a church history tour.
