W. Valley teen accidentally shoots friend, flees

WEST VALLEY CITY -- A 16-year-old boy has been arrested after West Valley City police say he accidentally shot his friend and then left the scene.

West Valley City police Lt. Lamonte Cox says the shooting happened Thursday afternoon, while teen boy was hanging out at the Homestead Farms Apartments with the victim and a teenage girl.

The girl told police the suspect tried to shoot the ground and was having trouble, so he kept playing with the gun and accidentally shot his friend in the abdomen.

Cox says the 15-year-old victim was taken to a hospital in Murray is expected to survive.

Police Lt. Matt Elson says officers found the suspect at his house and later booked him into juvenile detention on gun-related charges.
