SALT LAKE CITY -- Salt Lake City Mayor Ralph Becker is offering residents a deal that sounds too good to be true: A heavily discounted transit pass - $30 a month instead of $90.
The Utah Transit Authority says it's similar to discounts it authorizes for other large organizations, but offering it to all residents of a city is unprecedented.
Becker frames it as a clean-air initiative: Utah is under pressure to stop violating federal pollution standards, and officials say transit can do more to clean the air than anything.
Officials expect 6,000 Salt Lake City residents to sign up for the $30 photo-identification pass, which they can pay on their utility bills for added convenience.
The proposal goes to the City Council and UTA board for approval.
