NORTH SALT LAKE -- When a loose tire hit a minivan here Sunday, Oct. 6, the resulting injuries were, fortunately, not life-threatening.
The accident, just before 11 a.m., occurred when a pickup truck from Idaho hauling a fifth-wheel trailer, traveling southbound on Interstate 15 near Mile Marker 311, lost a tire.
The tire bounced over a 6-foot concrete barrier and struck the windshield of a northbound minivan, breaking the windshield and damaging roof of the minivan, said a news release from Utah Highway Patrol.
Inside the minivan was a family from West Jordan.
The driver and front passenger of the minivan were transported to University of Utah Medical Center, while others in the van were taken to Primary Children's Hospital, both in Salt Lake City.
The pickup and fifth-wheel continued southbound, with the driver and passenger unaware they had lost a tire, said the release.
A witness followed the pickup until officers were able to stop them.
Improper tightening of the lug nuts is a possible factor in the loss of the tire, said the release. Further investigation is pending.
