WEST POINT -- A 22-year-old man is accused of beating up another man and leaving him nearly unconscious, deputies said.

Kolbey Chance Rice was arrested and booked in the Davis County Jail on simple assault on Sunday, said Davis County Sheriff's Sgt. Susan Poulsen. Rice posted bail and has been released.

Local hospital officials called the sheriff's office after a mother brought her son into the emergency room early Sunday morning.

The assault occurred at a West Point home as people were leaving a party, Poulsen said.

Rice took offense to something that was said by someone who was leaving the party.

"He threw the victim to the ground and beat him near unconsciousness," Poulsen said.

The victim's mother saw the injuries several hours later and took the man to a hospital. Two other people at the party identified Rice as the person who assaulted the victim, Poulsen said.

The man was treated for his injuries and released from the hospital.

Poulsen said alcohol is a factor in the case.
