SALT LAKE CITY -- Salt Lake County is asking Gov. Gary Herbert to shut down a medical-waste incinerator accused of releasing toxic pollution at times going back years.

The Deseret News reports that the Salt Lake County Council voted unanimously Tuesday to make the request.

Stericycle Inc. is challenging a list of citations filed by state regulators in May against the company's burn plant in North Salt Lake.

The incinerator is actually located just inside Davis County, but officials say emissions can blow over Salt Lake County.

The Lake Forest, Ill.-based company says it operates in full compliance with state permits and has improved emissions and monitoring equipment.
