SALT LAKE CITY -- The Darts were due.
Davis High's girls tennis team, a perennial power in the state 5-A ranks, captured the 2013 state championship in dramatic fashion on Saturday afternoon at Salt Lake City's Libert Park.
It is the first girls state tennis title for Davis in its storied 100-year history.
The Darts finished sixth at state in 2009, jumping to fifth in 2010, third in 2011 and second a year ago.
On Saturday, Davis had to wait until the No. 2 doubles match had ended to celebrate their title.
Had Lone Peak won that final match, the Knights would have shared the title with Davis. But Bingham won the showdown, giving the Darts a 22-20 win over Lone Peak.
The Darts picked up key points in all five divisions, with Breanna Turley, Whitney Turley and Eliza Hafen sweeping the singles titles.
Brianna Turley, a junior, breezed to the No. 1 singles crown, defeating Pleasant Grove's Sarah Clifford, 6-1, 6-0. Her toughest match came in a 4-6, 6-1, 6-0 victory over Lone Peak's Leah Heimuli in the semifinals.
Brianna, known as Breezy, was the No. 2 singles champ in 2011 and 2012.
Whitney Turley, a freshman, won the No. 2 singles title with a 6-0, 6-2 victory over Morgan Hall of Lone Peak. Whitney lost just three games in four matches.
Hafen, a freshman, defeated Electra Cocharn of Lone Peak, 6-0, 6-4, to win the title at No. 3 singles. She lost just five games in the tournament.
Davis' Brooke Burningham and Emily Watkins fell in the No. 1 doubles semifinals, 6-0, 6-3. At No. 2 doubles, Davis' Kendall Sargent and Annie Gardner fell in the semifinals, 6-4, 6-3.
Northern schools haven't had significant state success in girls tennis, save for Bountiful's 4-A titles. St. Joseph won 2-A/1-A titles in 2007 and 2011.
Now the Darts can add to that resume. And with all four of the seven girls returning for coach Andy Wahlstrom, Davis could start its next 100 years in style.
* 4-A CHAMPIONSHIPS: Timpview edged five other schools for the title trophy, thanks in part to Kate Cusick's 6-2, 6-2 win at No. 1 singles, the Thunderbirds' only division win.
Bonneville's Hannah Jones fell to Judge Memorial's Katie Iswasaki, 6-3, 7-5, in the No. 1 singles semifinals. At No. 2 singles, Bonneville's Hailey Daniels defeated Bountiful's Mariah Miller, 7-5, 6-4, in the semifinals, but fell to East's Ruby Parkin, 6-3, 6-4, in the title match.
Bountiful's Sarah Jones advanced to the No. 3 singles, final, losing to Sarah Cassell of Skyline, 6-0, 3-6, 6-4.
Sky View's Casey Hunt and Sara Pierson lost in the No. 2 doubles final, 7-6, 6-3.
Timview had 12 points, with Olympus at 11. Bonneville, Bountiful and Maple Mountain tied for third with eight points.
In the 3-A championships, Park City scored 20 points to defeat Pine View (14), Desert Hills (12) and Grantsville (9). The Cowgirls' Bailee Sandberg and Becca Toone won at No. 2 doubles, 6-4 7-6.
