Dave and Virginia Nickerson recently celebrated their 65th wedding anniversary.
They were married on Oct. 11, 1948, in Mancos, Colo.
He was born on Sept. 28, 1926, in Bloomfield, N.M., to John F. and Filomena Nickerson. He recently celebrated his 87th birthday. He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II and saw many countries. He later worked as a civil servant for the U.S. government for 34 years, retiring from Hill Air Force Base in 1985 as a section chief.
She was born in Stoner Creek, Colo., on Dec. 28, 1931, to Remegio and Lucy Chavez. She worked for the private sector for more than 15 years and the U.S. government for 13 years, retiring in 1995 from Hill Air Force Base.
They have lived in Layton for 58 years.
Their children and their spouses are Rudy and Jeanette Nickerson, and Tim and Melinda Nickerson. Their daughter, Cynthia Coles, died earlier this year, leaving behind her spouse Michael Coles. They have 12 grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren.
They say that besides love, forgiveness and understanding, the keys to their successful marriage are to treat your spouse like an equal, work as a team and always be considerate of each other. They believe in teaching by example.
