No charges in N. Logan ricin suicide attempt

NORTH LOGAN -- A Utah woman who attempted suicide using highly toxic ricin, causing a National Guard-led decontamination effort, will not be charged.

The Herald Journal of Logan reports that the U.S. Attorney's Office declined to press charges because the 37-year-old woman didn't intend to harm anybody but herself.

On Oct. 2, more than a dozen members of the Utah National Guard were called to North Logan to help decontaminate her basement apartment. Police had detected small amounts of ricin on a grinder, and evacuated a family of four that was living upstairs.

Ricin is derived from castor beans. Police say the woman apparently ordered 60 castor beans online, ground them up and ate half of them.

The woman survived, and is in the care of family in another state.
