OGDEN -- The Weber School District junior high girls softball championship game between top seed Wahlquist and No. 2 seed Rocky Mountain was staged on Oct. at the Weber State University softball complex, with the Eagles claiming the title with an exciting 1-0 victory.
"Both teams put up a solid performance on the field," Wahlquist coach Robbie Done said. It is the Eagles' fourth title in 10 seasons.
Wahlquist pitcher Ashlee Nebeker pitched a strong game with nine strikeouts, one walk, leaving six Rocky Mountain players on base.
Wahlquist shortstop Abby Broadbent hit a single to right field in the second inning, bringing Hadley Bennett across home plate for the only score of the game.
Rocky Mountain pitcher Kierstyn Ketchell also had a good performance on the mound, holding Wahlquist to only one run, with six strikeouts, and three walks.
In the top of the seventh, Emily Nelson made the defensive play of the game, tracking down a long fly ball. Nebeker struck out the final two batters.
Wahlquist finished the season with a 10-0 record and scored 134 total runs for the season, with only five runs scored against them.
"I'm very proud of these girls and the hard work they put forth this season. They practice hard and played hard and they truly deserve this championship trophy," Done added.
