BRIGHAM CITY -- Police are looking for a man who may have attempted to kidnap a young girl.
Brigham City Police Lt. Dennis Vincent said police received a report Saturday from a mother who said a suspicious man that evening had been speaking with her 4-year-old daughter in front of their home. When the mother went outside, the man, who had not touched the girl, hurried into his maroon extended-cab pickup truck and drove away.
Because there is no evidence the man actually was attempting to abduct the girl, police have classified the incident as a suspicious circumstance, Vincent said. But that's not necessarily to say the man's intentions weren't, in fact, sinister.
"He absolutely could have been trying to kidnap her," Vincent said. "We've stepped up our patrols."
The mother described the man as white, in his 40s or 50s, with a gray sweater and blue jeans, Vincent said. Since that description is hard to go on, police have been keying their efforts on looking for the truck.
Since the incident Saturday, police have received additional reports from people who believe they may have seen the man, Vincent said. It's unclear if any of those reports are connected, however, as the maroon truck was not seen in those incidents.
Police also have noticed mentions of possibly related suspicious circumstances on social-media websites. Vincent said those posting online should also contact authorities, because police can't monitor every social-media posting for tips.
Vincent encouraged anyone with information about the possible suspect to call Brigham City Police at 435-734-6650.
