If you listen to the experts, positive self-esteem tells you that you should feel good about yourself, your life and your accomplishments. Self-esteem is that part of yourself that evaluates and judges your worth to your family, friends, employers and, most importantly, to yourself. Self-esteem starts in childhood, when the adults around you let you know how they feel about you. As a child, you internalize how you are treated and develop an opinion of yourself based on that treatment. Self-esteem is not set in stone; it should grow and change as you do. Unfortunately, it may not grow and change because you may hold on to outdated or inappropriate views of yourself that do not fit who you are now.
How much do you like yourself? It is amazing how few of us really like ourselves. Most of us never fully appreciate or enjoy who we are or meet the challenge of striving toward who we can become. Too often, if given the chance, many people would rather be someone else. It is hard to like yourself when you spend your time wishing you were someone else or constantly criticizing yourself.
