KAYSVILLE -- The Darts had the Vikings right where they wanted them.
After taking its first lead of the game with less than five minutes remaining in the fourth quarter, Davis let it slip away in the blink of an eye, as Pleasant Grove escaped with a 22-15 win in the first round of the state 5-A playoffs.
A successful two-point conversion gave the Darts a 15-14 lead after quarterback Colton Chronister hooked up with receiver Abel Porter for a 9-yard touchdown strike with 4:41 left in the game. But the Vikings responded in a flash, returning the ensuing kickoff 50 yards to set up shop on the Davis 20-yard line after a facemask penalty tacked 15 more yards on the return.
Three plays later, Pleasant Grove (9-2 overall, 4-2 Region 4) drove a dagger into the hearts of the brown-and-gold faithful, as Vikings tailback TJ Wind pumped in a 4-yard touchdown run -- his third of the game -- to reclaim the lead for good and send the previously unbeaten Darts home for the season.
"It was a battle, but at the end of the day, they did what they needed to do to beat us on our home field," said Davis coach Ryan Bishop. "We have a resilient group of dudes and I feel bad it had to end this way for them."
Trailing the entire game, the Region 1 champion Darts (9-1, 6-0) waited until the fourth quarter to make their move on back-to-back possessions. Quarterback Colton Chronister pulled his squad to within seven points with a 9-yard touchdown run, and then hooked up with receiver Abel Porter for a 9-yard strike on fourth-and-goal in the ensuing possession. That set up the go-ahead two-point conversion.
While special teams blunders spelled doom for Davis in the second half, it was a mistake-filled first half that put the Darts in a 14-0 hole.
Pleasant Grove blocked a Darts punt early in the first quarter, which set up a 5-yard scoring run from Wind a few plays later. Davis then punted on its next two possessions, as the Vikings kept constant pressure on Chronister, picking up four sacks in the first half.
A 55-yard drive, capped by another touchdown run from Wind, put Pleasant Grove up 14-0 at the break.
"We played erratic in the first half," Bishop said. "We couldn't get drives going on offense, keeping our defense on the field. There were some unfortunate deals with penalties and special teams things that you can't have breakdowns on. And we did."
