SALT LAKE CITY -- Police are searching for a Bountiful fugitive accused of leading officers on a chase in a stolen car, which resulted in the evacuation of a Home Depot store.
Charlie Roberts, spokesman for The Utah Motor Vehicle Enforcement Division, said the chase started Wednesday morning in West Valley City, when police spotted Travis McDonald, 31, in a tan pickup truck believed to have been stolen last week. Officers soon called off the pursuit, however, when McDonald went into a residential neighborhood.
Shortly after, McDonald crashed the truck into a ditch near 5600 West and Interstate 80, Roberts said. He then allegedly stole a white Chevy pickup truck and plowed through a gate, at which point officers resumed the pursuit.
McDonald ended up near 1850 S. State Street in Salt Lake City, Roberts said, where police lost track of him. A worker at a local business told officers canvassing the neighborhood that McDonald entered a nearby Home Depot store.
Police evacuated the Home Depot and searched it for roughly an hour but were unable to find McDonald, Roberts said. As of Wednesday afternoon, McDonald, who is described as white, about 6-foot tall and 165 pounds, was still at-large.
McDonald, who has a lengthy criminal history, has warrants out for his arrest, stemming from drug and theft charges filed last month in 3rd District Court in Salt Lake City, according to court documents.
