Grizzlies post exciting shootout win

WEST VALLEY CITY -- The Utah Grizzlies defeated the Ontario Reign 3-2 in a shootout Monday evening at Maverik Center before 7,756 fans in a spirited and competitive hockey game that lasted two hours and 48 minutes.

The win gives Utah their second-straight win against the Pacific Division-leading Reign and four of six points on the weekend after coach Tim Branham added six new players to the lineup for the series.

Rylan Galliardi gave Utah a 1-0 lead with less than a minute to go in the first period as he fired a puck through traffic with Mathieu Aubin acting as a screen in front.The goal was Galiardi’s second in two games. Michael Pelech dug the puck up behind the net to keep the play alive and Mike Folkes picked up an assist as well.

Ontario tied it up with a five-on-three goal in the second period and then took a 2-1 lead with a goal in the final 56 seconds of the second period as Mario Lamoureux streaked through the slot and fired through traffic.

Utah battled back in the third period by outshooting Ontario 16-5. They scored a five-on-three power-play goal 9:13 into the frame from Adam Pineault; who hammered in a loose puck after Stefan Warg clanged a post. Mathieu Aubin picked up an assist as well.

“It was a great three games and we’re looking forward to Colorado next week,” said Pineault. “We’ve got a hard hard working group and with how hard we work and with the systems we’re starting to learn, we’re going to be a good team this year.

Grizzlies goaltender Aaron Dell stopped a breakaway with the game 2-1 Ontario to keep Utah within a goal in the third period. He stopped 26 of 28 in the game, four of five in the shootout and made several spectacular stops in overtime to improve to 2-1 with Utah.

Utah outshot Ontario 41-28 in the game.



Utah hosts Colorado Saturday and Monday.
