FARMINGTON -- A man accused of causing the death of his girlfriend's 1-year-old daughter entered a not guilty plea to a child homicide charge.
Tyler Ryan Geary, 25, is charged with first-degree felony child homicide. If convicted, he could be sentenced to five years to life in the Utah State Prison. He is held in the Davis County Jail in lieu of $300,000 bail.
He appeared before Judge Thomas Kay on Thursday.
Another hearing is set for Dec. 5.
Some of the infant's family members who attended Thursday's hearing wore T-shirts with the infant's photo and the words "Justice for Aliyah Faye Wild" printed on them.
Family members of Geary also attended the hearing.
Aliyah died on Sept. 17 at Primary Children's Medical Center in Salt Lake City. She was flown there on Sept. 10 after her mother and Geary took the child to Davis Hospital early that morning.
According to court documents, the injuries the baby had were "consistent with head trauma inflicted from shaking. Emergency surgery to remove a portion of the skull was required in an effort to reduce the pressure on the brain from swelling."
Geary admitted to police he had shaken Aliyah for about 30 to 40 seconds and then threw her on the bed.
