SOUTH OGDEN -- Food banks and pantries around northern Utah are getting a hefty donation thanks to a friendly competition among local Realtor brokerages.
The Northern Wasatch Association of Realtors held a food drive challenge for several of its affiliate brokerages,
The past month the brokerages collected thousands of non-perishable food products. In total, the teams collected about 15,700 food items, spokeswoman for the Association, Lene' Balster, said.
On Friday morning at the association's office, the teams got together to load their haul into the trucks that would take them to the food banks.
The organizations that received food were Catholic Community Services, St. Anne's Shelter, the Salvation Army and the Box Elder Food Pantry.
The top five teams were also able to select a charity where the association would donate grants. The winning brokerages selected the Family Support Center of Ogden, Shop With A Cop, St. Anne's, the National Kidney Foundation and the Hill Airforce Base Roundup.
A total of $10,000 will be given to the organizations, Balster said.
The top brokerage pulled in about 3,000 food items, and did so because one of the Realtors used Facebook to ask for donations that she would then match, Balster said.
Balster said the association gives about $20,000 to local charities each year, but this was the first time it turned it into a competition.
The association plans on having next year's event even bigger with a goal to get more brokerages to participate.
