PROVO -- Matt Carlino scored 16 points as BYU easily beat Colorado Mesa 84-60 Saturday night in the second round of the CBE Hall of Fame Classic.
Colorado Mesa, a Division II program, shot 10 of 22 in the first half, including five 3-pointers, to keep the game close. BYU (4-0) went into halftime up 36-28.
The Cougars blew the game open after the break, ripping off a 21-1 run in the first eight minutes of the second half. Carlino scored six points during the run.
The Mavericks did cut the lead to 13 on a Landon Vermeer 3-pointer with 5:18 to play, but BYU responded with an 8-0 run, killing the comeback. Vermeer led Colorado Mesa with 23 points.
This was BYU's third-straight game with six players to hit double figures. Kyle Collinsworth added six assists to go along with his 12 points, and Nate Austin pulled down 12 rebounds.
Tyler Haws sat out the game, nursing an abdominal injury.
* UTAH STATE 71, UC SANTA BARBARA 64: At Santa Barbara, the hot shooting of guards Preston Medlin and Spencer Butterfield boosted the Aggies to the win at the Thunderdome.
Medlin scored 19 points, Butterfield chipped in with 16 and Ben Clifford added 10 off the bench to help USU improve to 3-0.
Jarred Shaw had nine points and nine rebounds for the Aggies.
* NO. 10 OHIO STATE 52, NO. 17 MARQUETTE 35: At Milwaukee, Shannon Scott and Sam Thompson scored 13 points apiece, helping No. 10 Ohio State pull away from cold-shooting No. 17 Marquette for a 52-35 win Saturday.
Aaron Craft added 10 points for the Buckeyes (3-0), who ended the Golden Eagles' 27-game home winning streak, second-longest in the nation.
Ohio State slowly grabbed control with a 12-4 run to open the second half, which included six points from Scott. The 6-foot-1 guard found gaps in Marquette's interior defense, and then extended the lead to 44-28 with 6:31 left on a layup on the break.
Todd Mayo led Marquette (2-1) with 11 points. It was the school's first loss at the Bradley Center since Vanderbilt beat the Golden Eagles 74-57 on Dec. 29, 2011.
* NO. 9 SYRACUSE 69, COLGATE 50: At Syracuse, N.Y., C.J. Fair scored 20 points for Syracuse, and freshman guard Tyler Ennis hit four 3-pointers for 12 points.
Michael Gbinije had 11 points in 18 minutes and Trevor Cooney scored 10 for the Orange, who outrebounded Colgate 52-34, including a 26-7 advantage on the offensive glass. Syracuse scored 30 points in the paint and forced 21 turnovers.
Syracuse (3-0) has won 48 straight against Colgate for a 121-45 advantage in the longest-running series for both teams. Colgate (0-2) was coming off an 89-78 road loss to Wake Forest last week in the Raiders' season opener.
Ethan Jacobs led Colgate with 13 points and Austin Tillotson, a transfer from Monmouth, finished with nine points and four assists.
* NO. 11 FLORIDA 86, UALR 56: At Gainesville, Fla., Casey Prather scored 27 points and Dorian Finney-Smith showed great versatility in his Florida debut.
Prather put back a loose ball, scored on a driving layup and capped off a 17-4 run with a dunk off a steal by DeVon Walker as Florida (2-1) woke up from a first-half malaise.
