SALT LAKE CITY -- At the end of six grueling boxing rounds at The Complex Friday night in Salt Lake City, Davis County Sheriff's deputy Gary Cobia sank to his knees when he heard his name announced as the winner.
On his knees, raising his arms in triumph, Clearfield's Cobia celebrated a hard-fought unanimous decision over Ogden heavyweight Fred Spitzenberg. With the win, Cobia is now 1-3 with 1 no contest. Spitzenberg falls to 1-1.
Cobia's win also provides a measure of satisfaction, as Spitzenberg outpointed Cobia nearly two years ago in both fighters' pro debuts.
It was not an easy win for Cobia, who weighed 271 pounds. Midway through round 1, Spitzenberg landed a hard left hook to the aggressive Cobia, sending him dazed and staggering across the ring. However, Cobia recovered, surviving the round.
"Fred hits like a freight train. I did get hurt really bad in the first round. ... I was just determined to win so I pushed hard," said Cobia.
In round 2, Cobia took control of the fight, mostly outhustling the heavy Spitzenberg, who weighed 320 pounds. Cobia used his jab effectively, and frequently pounded his opponent to the body. As the fight progressed, Spitzenberg tired, and fought a more stationary fight, keeping his hands up and trying to land big counterpunches as Cobia approached.
"Gary got bombed early, and couldn't follow the fight plan. What he did was all heart and toughness," said Cobia's trainer Ryan Gregory. "I would also like to thank Fred for giving his all and then some," added Gregory.
After six rounds, Cobia scored a unanimous decision, with judges' tallies of 59-55 twice and 58-56. The Standard-Examiner scored the bout 59-56 for Cobia.
Cobia is eager to get his second win, and hopes to fight often in the Top of Utah. "I have more fights in the future I'm trying to set up. I should fight in January or March," he said.
A bout that was supposed to feature undefeated cruiserweight Jesse West, of Fruit Heights, was canceled just prior to the card. In the main event, Salt Lake City lightweight Cesar Olmedo defeated Antonio Montoya.
