OGDEN -- The Weber State University Board of Trustees this week approved name changes for two departments and added a School of Computing title that will serve as an umbrella between two other departments.
The Department of Sales and Service Technology will become the Department of Professional Sales.
Kevin Sullivan, vice chairman of the WSU Board of Trustees, explained before the trustees approved the change that a lot of sales opportunities for WSU graduates are for nontechnical sales. The name change was to address the concern that a Technical Sales degree might create bias against its holder when he or she applied for a professional sales job.
The Department of Electronics Engineering will become the Department of Electrical Engineering.
The new name is more in keeping with similar departments at other universities, Sullivan said. The name change will help the public, other universities and potential employers understand the nature of the department and degrees in the major, Sullivan said.
And two departments, Computer Science and Network Technology & Business Multimedia, will both be part of the new School of Computing. David Ferro, Dean of the College of Applied Science and Technology, said the designation will help the departments work together more closely, to share resources, and to not duplicate offerings to students.
Changes will go into effect in the summer of 2014.
