BRIGHAM CITY -- An aging purported meth lothario is in jail on charges of rape, aggravated kidnapping, assault, robbery, drug possession, and weapons charges from attacks alleged on two women in one week.
Bradley Joe Smith, 57, of Deweyville, is held in the Box Elder County Jail in lieu of $80,864 bail since his arrest the day after Christmas. At arraignment, 1st District Judge Ben Hadfield refused a defense request to lower Smith's bail and scheduled a Jan. 23 pre-trial conference for setting of a preliminary hearing.
In a 5-page probable cause affidavit filed by Box Elder County Sheriff's Sgt. Dale Ward, head of the detective division, the victim, 20, said she had an ongoing sexual relationship with Smith, sometimes consensual, other times not. She told police he threatened her with a small club or a gun if she wouldn't perform, or plied her with meth during their 4-month relationship.
"She went on to explain that it had gotten to the point that she was so addicted that she, at times, was willing to exchange sexual favors for drugs," the affidavit said. She said she consented to "threesomes" with Smith and his friends.
Ward wrote in the affidavit describing his videotaped interview with the young woman that she admitted to a meth addiction and prior sex with Smith, but she also stressed "that even though she consented in the past to sexual relations she has the right to refuse future encounters."
She went to the police when on Dec. 22 she said she refused Smith sex and he threatened to throw her out of his trailer naked in the snow. In this case she had no car and "she was trapped," according to the affidavit.
The woman also told the detective sergeant that Smith videotaped their sex life with a camera hidden above his bed in a storage area concealed by a curtain. "She said he had finally told her and showed her the videos and apologized for taping without her consent," according to the affidavit. She described the camera as an older VHS model.
During the serving of a search warrant on Smith's trailer, the affidavit said, the small club, the narcotics, the video camera, and the handgun, which turned out to be a BB gun, were all located generally in the areas where the victim said they were kept.
Smith is also charged with assaulting another one of his apparent girlfriends five days earlier, on Dec. 17, when she tried to leave with another man after an argument. He is charged with choking her, taking her purse and threatening to kill her.
According to charging documents the 19-year-old woman said Smith told her, "If this is how it's going to be then you better hope I never see you again or I swear to God I'll f------ kill you."
Smith's criminal record, according to the state courts database, is fairly recent for someone nearly 60 years old, beginning with drug charges in 1993 in Brigham.
A stalking case was filed here in 2005, followed by violation of protective order counts in Farmington in 2006, drugs charges in Logan in 2008, and a theft by receiving case here in 2010.
