FARMINGTON -- After months of planning, discussing, and revising, Davis School District has agreed on the school calendar year for 2014-2015 with school beginning Aug. 25 and ending June 4, 2015.
Much of the debate concerning the new calendar involved the short, two-day spring break the committee originally brought to the school board several weeks ago. Board members agreed their constituents would not like the short spring break, so asked the committee to revise it with a weeklong spring break.
Historically, spring break was held the Friday and Monday surrounding Easter weekend. A week-long break was tested in 2002 and has remained in place, with the exception of a shorter spring break in 2008.
After 4,000 comments from the public on the district's website and Facebook in recent weeks regarding the first two calendar proposals and 1,000 comments on the third proposed calendar, 75 percent of the commenters were in favor of a longer spring break, so the district went ahead and approved the calendar year with a weeklong spring break, to be held the last couple of days of March leading into April.
