Mark Twain said "Everybody talks about the weather but nobody does anything about it." There's not a lot we can do about the weather but I think there are some things that we can do to help with the pollution here in the valley.
One of the biggest contributors to the pollution is auto emissions. I have a couple of "far out" possible solutions for you to think about with respect to auto emissions. I know that there are some places where this first idea wouldn't work, but most intersections where there are stop signs now, could be replaced with "Yield" signs. After all, they both do the same thing. They make us yield to oncoming traffic. After bringing a car to a complete stop, more energy has to be used to bring it back up to the speed of travel, thus more fuel burned, more emissions expelled and more pollution. Yes, I know, some places need a stop sign! But I think most could be changed.
The next idea to think about is for high traffic intersections like the Family Center at Ogden Five Points (where Washington Boulevard and Highway 89 come together); Riverdale Road and Wall Ave.; and Riverdale Road and 1900 West in Roy, as well as many other intersections where cars sit idling for hours on end every day. With the roundabout, most cars wouldn't have to come to a complete stop thus cutting down on pollution as I mentioned above. They work really well once you get used to them. There are other cities in the valley that have used these types of intersections. We need more of them in the Weber and Davis County areas.
I'm sure there are many more positive remedies that we collectively could come up with. There's a solution for every problem. We just need to think creatively to find them!
