ROY — Police say an accident that backed up rush-hour traffic and sent two people to the hospital was caused by “distracted driving.”

The accident occurred at about 3:45 p.m. at 5600 S. and 2500 West.

Officers on scene said westbound traffic on 5600 South was already backed up when a silver SUV allegedly failed to yield to slowing traffic and smashed into the back of another car, which through a chain reaction hit a third vehicle in front of it. The three vehicles were totaled.

Two people were transported to an area hospital via ambulance. The extent of their injuries was unknown, but were not life-threatening. A third victim was injured, but not transported.

Officers on scene said the cause of the accident was most likely distracted driving. Police could not confirm if the driver who initiated the accident was on a cell phone.
