SALT LAKE CITY — As the largest family history conference in the U.S. gets ready to kick off this week in Salt Lake City, The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints’ family history research center says it’s preserving and digitizing historical records faster than ever before.
Family Search spokesman Paul Nauta says the church organization is partnering with five private genealogy companies to finish putting 5.3 billion historical records online. They expect to finish in about 20-30 years.
Nauta says that same task would have taken 300 years for Family Search on its own.
As more records become accessible online, it becomes easier for people around the world to trace their family roots.
Mormons’ focus on genealogy is rooted in their belief that family relationships continue into eternity.STORY:201402040035lDS Church, genealogy companies work together/Local/2014/02/04/lDS-Church-genealogy-companies-work-together.html-1
