BRIGHAM CITY -- Prosecutors have dropped four new cases on a Thatcher man in alleged assaults and harassments against the same woman that have intensified in the last two months.
The total of 13 counts filed in two days against Max Bateman, 43, range from assault to telephone harassment and in one incident accuse him of biting the woman's aunt on the ear, according to court records, which say he sometimes goes by the nickname Mad Max.
From that Dec. 2 incident, in addition to the assault, Bateman is charged with two counts of criminal trespass, and single counts of phone harassment, damaging a communication device and intoxication.
The four new cases in Box Elder County Justice Court join a still-pending assault charge involving the same woman from July 26, according to court records.
The woman had filed a "dating violence" protective order against Bateman July 30. She dropped the protective order in November, court records show.
Ending the period of relative peace, the Dec. 2 incident took place, followed by a Dec. 4 incident of telephone harassment and another full-blown confrontation Jan. 25. The latter led to charges against Bateman of domestic violence in the presence of a child, disorderly conduct, criminal trespass, criminal mischief and intoxication.
She filed for a new dating violence protective order two days later.
The new charges all filed last week also include a July 1 assault alleged on the woman. Box Elder County Chief Deputy Sheriff Kevin Potter said Bateman has become well-known to his officers, who investigated the cases now charged. "He's certainly been active with us the last couple of years."
Deputy County Attorney Blair Wardle, who filed the current charges, said dating violence protective orders are still relatively rare.
They are new to state law, Wardle said, only added to the protective order statute in May of last year, protective orders previously applicable only to spouses and cohabitants. He said he couldn't comment further on the cases.
