CEDAR VALLEY -- Utah County sheriff's deputies are investigating a paragliding accident that claimed the life of a 54-year-old Farmington man.

Sheriff's Lt. Yvette Rice says Ronald Carter died in the crash near the Cedar Valley Airport about 5:45 p.m. Sunday. She says he was paragliding with a group of friends when he plummeted an estimated 2,000 feet to the ground about five miles southwest of Fairfield.

Cedar Fort Fire Battalion Chief Jon Hodgkiss says paramedics responded to an emergency call but there was nothing they could do and Carter was pronounced dead at the scene.

Rice says they don't know yet whether weather may have played a role in the accident.
