Handcart Days set to begin Friday

BOUNTIFUL -- Historic tours, a parade and a fireworks show highlight scheduled events for Handcart Days 2011 in Bountiful.

The theme of this year's celebration, set for July 22-24, will be "Faith of Our Fathers."

Festivities will kick off Friday with events scheduled at the city park at 400 North and 200 West. Games and activities are scheduled at the park from noon to 10 p.m. Friday and from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday.

The city's annual parade is scheduled for Friday at 6 p.m. Event organizers are paring down the size of the evening parade to 85 entries after there were 135 entries last year.

Parade co-chairmanwoman Connie Rose said 135 entries are too many for the 1.8-mile festivity, and some people complained the parade took too long.

She said another key change in the parade will be an attempt to reduce the number of commercial entries from 56 last year to maybe 15 this year.

The parade route runs along Main Street from 1500 South to 400 North and then west to 100 West.

The fireworks show will be the same evening as the parade, with activity scheduled to begin around 9:45 p.m. at Mueller Park Junior High School.

Events on Saturday include a half marathon at 6:30 a.m. sponsored by the South Davis Recreation Center, and a 5K run at 7 a.m.

Free swimming is offered at the rec center from 10 a.m. to noon.

The Bountiful Exchange Club will host a chuckwagon breakfast from 8 a.m. to 11:30 p.m. Saturday at the park bowery, west of Bountiful Junior High School.

Bus tours of historical places in the city will be held from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. every hour on the hour Saturday at the Willey Cabin, 800 S. Main St.

One of the community's most historic structures, the Bountiful Tabernacle, will host an open house and tours from 9:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m., on the half hour, at 50 S. Main St.

The weekend of events will be capped off Sunday with a walking tour of Bountiful Cemetery, highlighting several pioneers.

Those wishing to tour the cemetery may come anytime between 6 p.m. and 8 p.m.
