SALT LAKE CITY -- An Idaho man was booked into jail Wednesday on suspicion of having sex with a 14-year-old girl who was traveling with him through Utah.
Eugene Mark Peters, 51, is a semi-truck driver and registered sex offender who left Idaho with the teenage runaway July 5, said Lt. Justin Hoyal, spokesman for the Unified Police Department.
Between then and July 11, they spent time at motels in Ogden and Midvale, which is in Salt Lake County, he said.
Hoyal said as far as he knows, the girl was with Peters voluntarily and they "had been in somewhat of a relationship for 11 months."
The girl's parents suspected she might be with Peters, Hoyal said. When his truck needed mechanical work, the trucking company told Peters to see a mechanic in Emery County. Law enforcement arrested him at the shop.
He was booked into Salt Lake County Jail on suspicion of rape and forcible sodomy, first-degree felonies, and forcible sexual abuse, a second-degree felony.
The investigation is ongoing and he could face further charges, Hoyal said.
