Caribbean storm: Rex Ryan has Mark Sanchez tattoo

NEW YORK — With the ink not even dry on the New York Jets’ dreadful season, Rex Ryan fled to the Bahamas only to be photographed lounging poolside at a resort hotel, book in hand, with an interesting tattoo gracing his right biceps.

It showed his wife, Michelle, wearing an unmistakably green Jets jersey emblazoned with the unmistakable No. 6 of embattled quarterback Mark Sanchez. And nothing else.

Reid and the Kansas City Chiefs should be quite familiar by now. The two sides spent much of Thursday, Jan. 3, 2013 in negotiations for Reid to become the Chiefs' coach, a person familiar with the situation told The Associated Press. Reid arrives in K.C., nears deal to become coach

KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Andy Reid arrived in Kansas City on Friday, and the Chiefs are close to making an official announcement that he will become their next coach.

Reid and the Chiefs have reportedly agreed to a deal giving the longtime Eagles coach broad authority over football decisions. His deal came hours after the Chiefs announced they had parted with general manager Scott Pioli after four tumultuous seasons.

Reid among 7 NFL coaches sacked in firing frenzy

SAN DIEGO — By lunchtime Monday, six NFL coaches were looking for work.

With the regular season ending the day before, the firings came at a furious clip and within a two-hour span the following were sacked: Andy Reid in Philadelphia, Lovie Smith in Chicago, Norv Turner in San Diego, Pat Shurmur in Cleveland, Romeo Crennel in Kansas City and Chan Gailey in Buffalo.

Eagles rally around embattled coach Andy Reid

PHILADELPHIA — From rookies to veterans, the Philadelphia Eagles fully support Andy Reid.

While many fans wanted him fired a long time ago and the media expects he’ll be gone next week, Reid’s players are firmly behind their embattled coach.

Avant rose from gang life to a man of Christ

PHILADELPHIA — Jason Avant raises his hands to the sky after every reception in celebration for much more than catching a ball.

Playing football for the Philadelphia Eagles doesn’t define Avant. After everything he’s endured, the 29-year-old wide receiver is not your ordinary professional athlete.

Best NFL rookie class? Could be

As the guy who drafted Peyton Manning, Bill Polian knows something about quarterbacks.

Polian calls this year’s class of rookie QBs the best since 1983, when guys named Elway, Marino and Kelly were selected.

Former Aggies bolster Seahawks' potent draft class

RENTON, Wash. — Everyone knows about Seattle stealing quarterback Russell Wilson in the third round of last April’s draft and perhaps finding the franchise quarterback so many NFL teams seek.

Getting less attention are the other rookies the Seahawks drafted in April who are making a significant impact in their first NFL seasons.

Tagliabue overturns Goodell on Saints suspensions

NEW ORLEANS — In a sharp rebuke to his successor’s handling of the NFL’s bounty investigation, former Commissioner Paul Tagliabue overturned the suspensions of four current and former New Orleans Saints players in a case that has preoccupied the league for almost a year.

Tagliabue, who was appointed by Commissioner Roger Goodell to handle the appeals, still found that three of the players engaged in conduct detrimental to the league. He said they participated in a performance pool that rewarded key plays — including bone-jarring hits — that could merit fines. But he stressed that the team’s coaches were very much involved.

Pity the New York Jets: Harry Reid latest with swipe

WASHINGTON — The New York Jets and their quarterback controversy have turned into Washington’s political football.

Did Costas overstep his bounds with gun comments?

NEW YORK — Clearly, Bob Costas stirred up a hornet’s nest Sunday with a halftime commentary about Kansas City Chiefs player Jovan Belcher, who killed his girlfriend (and the mother of his child) before killing himself.

On Twitter, someone posed this question: "Who put Costas on in the middle of a football game so he could spew his one sided beliefs?" Another tweeter sharply recommended Costas "stick to football ... the more you talk, the dumber you sound." And on and on it went. The message resounded: Bob Costas, just shut up.

Police: Chiefs’ Belcher kills girlfriend, self

KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Kansas City Chiefs linebacker Jovan Belcher fatally shot his girlfriend Saturday, then drove to Arrowhead Stadium and committed suicide in front of his coach and general manager, thanking them for all they’d done before turning the gun on himself.

Authorities did not release a possible motive for the murder-suicide, though police said that Belcher and his girlfriend, 22-year-old Kasandra M. Perkins, had been arguing recently. The two of them have a 3-month-old girl who was being cared for by family.

WR has ’heard’ of Viagra use to gain edge on field

CHICAGO — The idea that NFL players might use Viagra to gain an edge on the field left Chicago Bears linebacker Lance Briggs practically in tears — from laughing.

He wasn’t the only one.
