WWII veteran gets up-close look at modern air base

HILL AIR FORCE BASE -- The nature of flight has changed in the more than six decades since Ben Fowler flew in history's biggest conflict, but he still could probably teach the pilots of today a thing or two.

On Friday, Fowler, a 91-year-old Riverdale resident and former World War II pilot, was given a tour at Hill Air Force Base that included an up-close-and-personal visit with some 388th Fighter Wing pilots, one of the base's F-16s and its munitions in an aircraft hangar along the flightline.

'Wish Kids' learn about life as Hill fighter pilot

HILL AIR FORCE BASE -- Luke Traughber found out firsthand Thursday what it's like to be an F-16 fighter pilot. But more important, he got a respite from a disease that has been his life for more than a year. The 11-year-old was one of nine Utah children from the Make-A-Wish Foundation who were treated to an interactive tour of the 388th Fighter Wing as part of Hill Air Force Base's "Pilot for a Day" program.

Hill's 388th Fighter Wing welcomes new commander

HILL AIR FORCE BASE — One of the world’s most aggressive F-16 fighter wings said goodbye to one leader and welcomed another Thursday morning.

In a change of command ceremony at Hill Air Force Base, Col. Scott Zobrist relinquished command of the 388th Fighter Wing and passed leadership over to Col. Scott Long.

Hill will lose 24 F-16s

HILL AIR FORCE BASE -- It appears the deactivation of a fighter squadron and 24 F-16s at Hill Air Force Base will happen before the summer ends.

388th Fighter Wing recognizes top maintenance professionals

The 388th Fighter Wing Maintenance Professional of the Year awards for 2009 were held Nov. 20 to honor individuals and groups within the fighter wing that performed above and beyond their calls of duty throughout the year.

The event's guest speaker, Maj. Gen. Andrew Busch, Ogden Air Logistics Center commander, noted an important Air Force leader who raised the standards for maintenance professionals and made efforts to recognize those who reached his standards -- the late Gen. Wilbur L.

HILL AIR FORCE BASE -- A historic unit of F-16 pilots returned to familiar skies Tuesday afternoon.

Round Up 'is not just a 388th thing, it's a basewide thing'

One of the largest fundraising events for the programs at Hill Air Force Base that benefit military families is going on next Friday. The event is the 388th Spouse's Round Up, an annual silent and live auction which raised more than $30,000 in 2008 for more than 13 Hill AFB programs.One such program that benefitted substantially from last year's fundraising efforts was the Utah Military Families Foundation, which received most of its yearly contribution from the Round Up committee.

New command chief brings small town values, 20 years of service to 388th FW

On the cusp of his 20-year mark serving in the Air Force, Chief Master Sgt. Atticus Smith, 388th Fighter Wing command chief, is eager to welcome the next decade of service to a career filled with rewards and challenges.Smith recently assumed the command chief position in August after serving as the director of education and commandant at the Kirtland Non-Commissioned Officer Academy in New Mexico, and he is now poised to bring his education and experience to the 2,500 Airmen of the 388th FW.
