Fatal Bountiful stabbing headed for trial

FARMINGTON — The father of the man who was stabbed to death is grateful the case is finally going to trial.

“This is a jury trial case,” said Richard Q. Dunn, father of Michael Dunn. “I’m just happy it’s going to trial.”

Michael Dunn, 55, died of stab wounds Feb. 21, 2012, in his Bountiful apartment. Police said Shannon Ryan Sander, 44, stabbed Dunn during a fight.

S. Ogden police seek 3 suspects in e-cig store burglary

SOUTH OGDEN — Police are searching for three burglars who stole about $4,700 worth of e-cigarettes and accessories from a South Ogden smoke shop.

Officers responded to an alarm at Vapor Royale, 4001 Riverdale Road, around 4 a.m. Monday, according to a South Ogden Police Department news release. They determined the business had been burglarized and the suspects had fled.

The burglars gained entry by throwing a rock through a door window, store owner Marco Herrera said Tuesday. High-end electronic cigarettes and assorted accessories were stolen.

WSU students attending W.Va. mock prison riot lock up career choices

A group of Weber State University criminal justice students capped a year of law-abiding studies with a field trip to prison, where they played criminals at what was once among the nation’s most violent penitentiaries.

This month, 21 Weber State students and three faculty members traveled to Moundsville, W.Va., for a mock prison riot.

“It gives students a chance to see what people see and do at a riot,” said Bruce Bayley, WSU associate professor of criminal justice. “There are people who work their entire careers in corrections and don’t get a chance like that.”

WEST VALLEY CITY — Newly released police records show that Utah officials believe Josh Powell likely killed his wife and that his brother, Michael Powell, helped dispose of the body, but authorities felt they didn’t have enough evidence to prove that theory in court.

Suspect escapes Wendover police car by climbing out window

WEST WENDOVER, Nev. — A Salt Lake City man who briefly escaped from Nevada police by climbing through a patrol car window is behind bars in West Wendover on a series of drug and escape charges.

Police started pursuing 24-year-old John A. Ramirez-Juarez Monday morning after he ran a stop sign on Wendover Boulevard.

He eventually pulled into a casino parking lot, was handcuffed and placed in the police car.

However, police say he took advantage of an unlocked window and climbed through back onto the street before officers apprehended him again.
